Proud to Have Provided Cabinets for Elgin’s Artspace Lofts

November 2, 2012

Artspace, a 55-unit live/work housing development for artists in downtown Elgin has started welcoming tenants. This $14.5 million project is meant to attract artists to affordable housing in downtown Elgin, while at the same time revitalizing downtown and establishing Elgin as an arts community. The project is developed by Artspace Projects, Inc., a nonprofit developer of arts facilities. We are proud to have provided the kitchen cabinets for these cool new residences.

The building includes housing, gallery space, a community room, a playground, courtyard, and commercial space. Learn more about the project, including how to apply to live there if you are an artist, at their website.

Artspace is made possible by federal tax credits and state affordable housing tax credits from the Illinois Housing Development Authority. In addition, our own Mark Seigle raised $500,000 in the private sector for the project, as he believes in the power of this community to contribute to a vibrant downtown and enhance Elgin’s cultural offerings.

  • Soon we’ll begin looking for a site to expand to the southwest suburban market.
  • We introduced a new Granite and Solid Surface countertop program, which has been met with tremendous success.
  • Seigle’s remains the market leader in supply of cabinetry to the new construction market while our consumer and remodeling segments have grown dramatically.

Timing is everything in the cabinetry business from design and quoting to shipment of the order and follow-up deliveries. Home Alone House Sells: Reminiscing on Our 15 Minutes of Fame

March 13, 2012

Home Alone houseThe house made famous as the one that Kevin McCallister “has to defend” in “Home Alone” sold last week for $1.585 million. This has us thinking about our stroll through Tinsel Town back in 1990.

You remember the scene: Kevin McCallister sits at his kitchen counter eating cereal, and it dawns on him—the hustle and bustle of having all his relatives in his house the previous evening is no longer there. He thinks about it, and worriedly delivers a great line from the movie, “I made my family disappear.” Then he remembers their rude comments to him from the day before, like “You are such a disease!” and “Look what you did, you little jerk!” Then he says it again, all the worry gone from his voice, “I made my family disappear!”

We remember the scene well. As well as the pizza dinner scene from the night before, the firecracker scene where one of the burglars thinks he’s overhearing a mob gunfight, and the blowtorch to the head during the famous defense of the house battle. Why these particular scenes?

Because these are some of the most memorable kitchen scenes from the movie, where Seigles Cabinets took its stroll through Hollywood. The house immortalized in “Home Alone” was located in Winnetka, IL, and Seigle’s actually supplied the MasterBrand cabinetry for the filming of the movie. So while everyone else is enjoying the young Macaulay Culkin charm as he cocks his BB gun and says, “This is it!” We are looking over his shoulder to catch our appearance in this Christmas classic.

Home Alone kitchen

So feel free to watch the movie again, imagine what it would be like to live in that famous house, and be on the look out for our guest appearance!

Interview with Mark Seigle, Celebrating 130 Years in Business

March 8, 2011

In 1881, the first Seigle’s Center (Elgin Lumber Company) opened its doors. A group of Elgin businessmen, led by the Borden dairy family, had come together to establish the business as they saw the need for a well-supplied lumber yard in the growing community of Elgin. Since then, the business has evolved into a high-end cabinet supplier and is now the largest distributor of kitchen and bath products in the Chicago area. We sat down with our president, Mark Seigle, to get his take on the 130 year anniversary, the past, the present, and where he plans to go.

When and why did Seigle’s transform from “Elgin Lumber Company” to “Seigle’s”?
The year was 1983 and we were opening stores throughout northeastern Illinois. We felt it was better to go to market with a unified image. Having always been very active in the management of our family-owned business, what better name than “Seigle’s”?

How many generations of Seigle’s have been involved with the company?
The company was founded by Lee Borden of the famed dairy family. Apparently he saw no future in his father’s penchant for churning butter or condensing milk. My father, Harold, purchased the company in 1941, and today my two children and I own the company.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Undoubtedly what I enjoy most is visiting with customers, whether in our showrooms, tradeshows, association events or in their office. I am very proud of the company we keep and love the chance to speak about our capabilities. (more…)
